Jesús María García (Villamejín, Proaza, 1960) is still the mayor of his council for the PSOE. Unless there is a surprise, on February 2, Fernando Figaredo’s PP will take power from him through a motion of censure supported by the sole councilor of Izquierda Unida, Juan Álvarez.
-What happened these days after PP presented the motion of censure?
–There were many calls and I received encouragement from people. In the town I found very little, tomorrow (today) when there is a market I will see more. Some say nothing to you and one that tells me something inspires me.
-What are you going to do? The United Left says he should resign.
–I have no reason to resign, therefore, I will not do it. When it comes to the motion, if they throw me out, I will stay in the opposition. I will stay where my voters put me, who told me to go ahead.
–His party, the PSOE, has committed to replacing the Mayor’s Office “in the shortest possible time.” Because?
–The parties signed an agreement and I am aware of it, but I do not agree. The agreement was fulfilled, to my regret, but all points were fulfilled.
–The first of them says he has to leave.
-Yes, but when the conditions come, and they are not, because there is no substitute. No one on my party’s list wanted it, so it wasn’t going to happen. We have not violated the agreement. Granted everything the IU councilor asked for. The only thing left out is the monitoring of the agreement, which should be done once a month. And no one wants to do it because they are only interested in my departure.
-Why did they ask for his departure?
-I don’t know, maybe it’s because of a personal hatred. I believe that I have committed no crime that requires me to resign. There must be a personal reason.
–Can it be redirected?
-I will not resign and I believe that they will not withdraw, because they have already signed the motion of censure and I believe that it will be voted on.
–They accused you of inaction, is that right?
–That’s an apology for not wanting to tell the real reason. This year, the Sangguniang Panlungsod has a big investment, we have a subsidy to change the LED lights in the whole council, also a tourism agreement for the shows in Linares, Bantuvo and Proaza, we will fix the playground.. .In Bustiello, there is an indication, made in the Principality, made in the last mandate. There are also smaller, everyday items.
–How do you get along with the future mayor, Fernando Figaredo?
–Well, I’ve known him before and I get along well with him despite the political differences.
–What does Proaza need?
-Many things. We need money to make water improvements, trails and roads. We mitigated the emergencies, but they did not end.
Juan Álvarez (Linares, Proaza, 1963) is the only councilor of Izquierda Unida in his council and on February 2 he will vote in favor of the motion of censure of the PP so that the famous Fernando Figaredo is the Mayor.
–The Asturian Socialist Federation (FSA) calls on you to “reconsider” your position and not support the PP in the motion of censure, will you do it?
-What the FSA should think about is what we agreed upon and called that person (the Mayor) to leave, which is what was written. We did not pave the way for PP, the FSA did.
–The Mayor says that the movement is due to personal hatred.
–This is politics, what do I have against him as a person? Besides, I told him to his face. The City Council is paralyzed, but how can it not be if it is against his own party? Who in the Principality will look at Proaza if he is against the FSA?
-IU agrees with PP, isn’t it anomalous?
– This is not an agreement. If we had not reached the pact signed by the FSA, the PP would have been in charge now because it is the most voted list.
–But isn’t it strange to support a mayor by demanding his subsequent departure?
–They (the Socalists) ruled here for 16 years. And in Proaza there is nothing.
–Then why did they reach this agreement? They could not have done it and the PP would have been in charge.
-Of course, but it is done on the condition that new people, from the list of PSOE itself, are in charge. He is the Mayor because he can only be that, occupying number 1 on the list. But the condition is that he leaves immediately.
–Why not establish a clear permanent agreement period?
–We said ten days and they said to us: ‘Man, give us time to organize this.’ We said okay. And it is not written, but it is said by word of mouth that this period shall not exceed three months.
-The Mayor did not sign the agreement. Do they feel cheated by the FSA?
–But to whom did he appear? The FSA cheated us and personally I feel cheated, but for everyone: Gimena Llamedo, Adriana Lastra, Rita Camblor, Noelia Macías…
–In recent days, have you talked to any socialists?
– No, I’m waiting until January. They said that the Mayor does not want to leave. So who is in charge? The FSA or the Mayor?
-The Mayor said that no one on his list wants to be a councilor
–If I prepare the list and tell them: “You say no”… In the summer, number 2 is in the process of taking the Mayor’s Office, but…
-There is a mayor from PP.
-Of course, but PP’s statements are sad. Will they take the mayorship and face Barbón? But Barbón is the one who will give way to something for Proaza. What did they do? Statements against someone who can help your council.
