The UK says a lab in England issued around 43,000 false negatives on virus tests.

The UK’s Health Protection Agency said in a statement on Friday that an estimated 43,000 people in Britain were mistakenly informed that they had previously tested negative for the coronavirus after testing positive.

The agency, which was formed two weeks ago, has suspended operations at a private laboratory in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands of England, following an investigation into the NHS Test and Trace programme, which was designed to track down anyone who who has come in contact with it. coronavirus.

The investigation revealed that about 43,000 people – most of whom were based in south-west England – had received false negatives on PCR tests from 8 September to 12 October, after the first positive test on lateral flow devices.

The mistake was described as “an isolated incident attributed to one laboratory” in a statement released Friday by the agency.

Dr Will Welfare, a director of the agency, said in the statement that officials were working with Test & Trace and the private company, Immensa Health Clinic, to determine “laboratory technical issues” that led to inaccurate results.

With lateral flow devices or PCR test kits “there is no evidence of any defect”, Dr Welfare said, “the public should remain confident in using them and other laboratory services currently provided.”

Officials with the Test and Trace program have said that they will contact those affected and request that they take another test. Existing samples are now being redirected to other laboratories for re-testing.
