The record-breaking heat that hit the UK last year could be considered “cold” by the end of this century, according to forecasts by the country’s Met Office.
Classified as “Exceptional” in 2022, the UK suffered a heat wave that caused temperatures to exceed 40 degrees Celsius and marked a new climatic milestone.
A year of average temperatures from 2022 to 2060 is projected if current CO2 levels are maintained.
The annual analysis of the UK climate compares the current climate to historical observations of temperature, rain, sun and wind.
Y Reaching the year 2100, that year would be ranked as the coldest year compared to the UK average.
The Met Office report says last year was a window into the future of the climate as it was the hottest year on record since temperatures began in 1884.
“The year 2022 was surprising, but the signs are that we should not be taken by surprise. The reality is that high temperatures and Heat waves like the ones we are experiencing are becoming more likely due to climate change,” said Mike Kendon of the National Weather Bureau’s Climate Information Center.
Kendon argued that “by 2060, a year like 2022 will be considered the norm, and by 2100, we’ll be talking about a rather cold year.”
The report indicates that last year was a window into the future of the climate, as it was the hottest year since temperature records began in 1884.
He argued that the observations showed that Temperature extremes change faster than average, and as our climate warms, we are likely to see many more record temperatures, often well above previous limits.”

This is shown by the collected data Temperature records are rising faster than average values, and the fluctuations of extreme temperatures are increasing.
