The United States will grant 20,000 work visas to Colombians. Here we explain how you can apply and what the benefits are.

The Embassy of the United States in Bogotá announced this Thursday that Colombia is included, for the first time, in a special annual allocation where they will grant visas so that Colombians can work temporarily in the North American country.

In that sense, there are 20,000 temporary H-2B work visas that will allow non-agricultural workers to legally apply for work in the United States.

Remember that to apply for an H2B visa, a US employer must first file a petition on your behalf, according to the entity.

The H-2B visa allows employers or their agents, who meet certain regulatory requirements, to bring foreign workers to the United States to temporarily fill non-agricultural jobs. .

Beginning April 13, 2023, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) began accepting petitions for workers for the second half of fiscal year 2023, with employment dates between May 15, 2023 and September 30, 2023.

To qualify for this visa, the applicant must demonstrate that there are insufficient willing, available, and qualified US workers to fill the vacancy. It is important to indicate that the demand for the services of future workers is temporary, even if the job functions are considered permanent.

Requests for additional allocations under this rule must be specifically filed with the California Service Center. Any petition filed in another location will be denied, and filing fees will be refunded.

  • Before applying for H-2B visa classification at USCIS, the employer must obtain a Temporary Employment Certification for H-2B workers from the United States Department of Labor (DOL).
  • The application process involves the petitioner’s submission of Form I-129 to USCIS. Once the Temporary Employment Certification is received from the DOL or Guam DOL (if applicable), the petitioner must file Form I-129 with USCIS, and in most cases, the Employment Certification must be submitted Temporary with the form .
