(CNN) — The United States will have a record number of female governors in 2023. Still, she would represent only a tiny fraction of executive functionaries in a record number of 12 – 50 states.
According to the Center for Women and American Politics at Rutgers University, the previous record for nine female governors serving together was set in 2004.
Incumbent female governors in Maine, Alabama, Michigan, Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas and New Mexico won re-election Tuesday, while New York Governor Kathy Hochul won her first full term since taking office in 2021. Two states—Massachusetts and Arkansas—were elected new female governors. According to the CAWP, Arkansas and Massachusetts will also become the first states to have female governors and lieutenant governors at the same time.
CNN has yet to conduct a screening on the two gubernatorial races — Arizona and Oregon — in which all candidates are women. She is included in the record of 12 women governors of the state.
