The US called on the regime to respect the right of the people to protest "without repression"; Cuba confirms contact about Ian's loss

The United States on Monday urged Cuba’s regime to respect its citizens’ right to protest, amid public demonstrations of popular discontent that have taken place in recent days, mainly in Havana.

In a message posted on Twitter, the US embassy on the island urged the government to “respect the right of the Cuban people to protest without repression or arrest, and to allow unrestricted access to the Internet.”

Diplomatic Headquarters reiterated the United States’ solidarity “with the Cuban people affected by Hurricane Ian” and its decision to express itself “in a peaceful protest”.

Cuba’s foreign ministry said on Monday that its government was in contact with US officials about the damage caused by the storm.

The island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) said on its Twitter account, “The governments of Cuba and the United States have exchanged information regarding the considerable damage and unfortunate loss caused by the #HurricaneIan in both countries.”

According to MINREX, the regime in Havana also maintains “communication with other governments interested in damages and recovery needs in Cuba”.

Last Friday, American newspaper wall street journal (WSJ) reported that, for the second time this year, the Havana government had requested the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden for help.

The WSJ cited diplomatic messages between Havana and Washington as saying, “According to communications reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, the Biden administration received a rare request from the Cuban government to provide them emergency aid after the devastating impact of Hurricane Ian.” The request has been received.”

The US newspaper reported that Cuba had “not requested an exact amount and it is still trying to measure the amount of damage” that Ian left on the west side of the island.
