The US government has imposed sanctions on Israeli settlers for attacking Palestinians

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, signed an executive order on Thursday that allows the imposition of sanctions on those who promote violent acts in the West Bank, where “high levels of violence by extremist residents” have reached “intolerable levels.”

According to the US president, the level of violence, added to the forced displacement of people and the destruction of property, also represents “a serious threat to the peace, security, and stability of the West Bank and Gaza, Israel, and the Middle East region.”

“These actions undermine the foreign policy goals of the United States, including the possibility of a two-state solution and ensuring that Israelis and Palestinians achieve equal measures of security, prosperity, and freedom,” Biden said in a note released by the White. House.

In this context, Biden ordered sanctions against the assets of people identified by the administration as responsible for or involved in violent actions in the West Bank that threaten the security of the local population or who work for companies that develop these actions.

For his part, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan pointed out that President Biden reiterated several times Israel’s right to defend itself from Hamas attacks in early October, which left nearly 1,200 dead.

Increasing violence” recorded in the West Bank

But it also emphasized that the US Administration is concerned about the “increase in violence” recorded in the West Bank “by extremist actors, especially the increase in violence by extremist settlers,” which reached a “record” level in 2023.

“This violence represents a serious threat to the peace, security, and stability of the West Bank, Israel, and the Middle East region, and it threatens the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States,” said Sullivan, who endorsed Biden’s words.

Thus, the National Security Advisor emphasized that Biden’s executive order would allow financial sanctions to be issued against those who direct or participate in acts of violence, intimidation, or forced displacement of civilians, or participate in terrorist acts in the West Bank.

“The State Department will also announce today an initial set of names under the new executive order,” Sullivan said, stressing that this measure adopted by Biden “seeks to promote peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians.”
