The US ordered Nvidia to stop exporting some chips for AI

The American developer of microprocessors and graphics cards, Nvidia explained that the new rule for the implementation of additional controls on exports of advanced technology elements, announced by the US government last week, “take effect immediately” and not after 30 days as indicated.

The company indicated in a statement – reported by Europa Press – on the Securities Market Commission (SEC) announced by the Government regarding the licensing requirements of the standard available in many of its products high-performance computing devices, warning that the new regulations will be implemented soon. These products are developed and marketed for data centers.

“These licensing requirements originally came into effect after a 30-day period as described for the first time in the company’s current report on the form filed with the SEC on October 17, 2023,” said the company, adding that exports of models A100, A800, H100, H800, and L40S will be affected.

Despite this, given the strength of demand for the company’s products around the world, Nvidia expects that the entry of new license requirements. no significant effect in the short term of its financial results. The change in plans by the US Commerce Department is due to further tightening of export controls on high-tech microchips that can be sold by Chinese manufacturers.

According to the person in charge of the Commerce portfolio, Gina Raimondothe strengthening of controls is aimed at access barriers to China of chips that will be the key to developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and computing. He believes that advances in these sectors can be used to improve the military technology capacity of the Chinese Army.
