The US plans to prosecute unruly air passengers as complaints rise.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on Wednesday ordered prosecutors to prioritize prosecutions for federal crimes committed on commercial aircraft as millions of travelers cross the United States on Thanksgiving, the nation’s most popular holiday.

As U.S. travel approaches pre-pandemic levels, the federal government has stepped up prosecutions of on-flight crimes, especially passengers who refuse to comply with Covid protocols. In some cases, passengers attacked or threatened flight attendants.

Federal law prohibits attacks, intimidation, and threats of violence that disrupt workers on flights, and other criminal acts that may occur while in flight.

The reports that flight attendants enter into the flight safety reporting system database sometimes describe a chaotic, hectic workplace where passengers routinely verbally abuse airline employees.

“Passengers who attack, intimidate, or threaten with violence against flight crews and flight attendants do more than harm to these employees; they interfere with critical responsibilities that help ensure safe travel, ”Garland said in a statement Wednesday.

Last year, there were 5,338 unruly passengers and 3,856 mask-related incidents, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Historically, the Federal Aviation Administration has dealt with such cases with civil sanctions, warnings and advice. However, in line with the current zero-tolerance policy for unruly passengers, established in January, the FAA has decided to apply civil penalties to the unruly passenger. A passenger can be fined up to $ 37,000 per violation and can be cited as multiple violations.
