The US Senate has begun working on aid for Ukraine after the border deal collapsed

The United States Senate decided on Thursday to begin discussion of an aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and other allies after the collapse of the border agreement, but doubts remain about the support of Republicans, who rejected the carefully negotiated agreement that includes measures to stabilize the border. with Mexico.

The decision to start working on the new package was won by 67 votes to 32, but the path remains uncertain. Senate leaders have not agreed on a process to limit debate time.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said it was a “good first step” and promised that the Senate would “continue to work on this bill… until the job is done.”

The Democrats tried to save $60 billion in aid for Ukraine and $35 billion for Israel, other allies, and national security issues after the collapse last week of a bipartisan agreement that would have included measures to strengthen the border. Republicans are divided, and their leaders are struggling to come up with a plan that satisfies everyone.

Even if it clears the Senate hurdle, the bill will face bigger problems in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, whose Speaker, Mike Johnson, has not commented on aid to Ukraine.

Some Republican senators have vowed to make every effort to delay the final decision.

“I will oppose anything that accelerates the approval of this rotten foreign spending bill,” said Republican Senator Rand Paul of X.

The United States no longer has the funds to send missiles and ammunition to Kiev when the war, which is almost two years old, is at a critical stage. Supporters of Ukraine say the lack of American support is already being felt on the battlefield and in civilian situations. Russia, on the other hand, continued its relentless attack.

“Right now, in the middle of winter, there are people in the trenches of Ukraine dying under bombs,” said Republican Senator Thom Tillis.

But many of his Republican colleagues have expressed serious reservations about supporting more funding for Ukraine. After rejecting the bipartisan plan for the border as insufficient, they once again insisted on linking border measures to foreign aid.
