The US Senate is facing a plan for Ukraine after the failure of the border project

Forcing a showdown with Republicans, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will try in the coming hours to save war funds from a failed deal that includes money for the border by continuing a try vote. Israel and other allies.

With the border deal failing, Schumer plans to force Republicans into two tough procedural votes. First, about the long-negotiated $118 billion border policing package that failed when Republicans rejected it; then, in a modified package that eliminates part of the border. If one of the two is approved, it will be a few days before the final vote.

Regarding Republicans who are reluctant to send money to Ukraine for its war against Russia, Schumer said that “history will cast a permanent and shameful shadow” on those who try to block it.

“Will the Senate stand up to brutal thugs like Vladimir Putin and assure our friends abroad that the United States will never abandon them when they need it?” Schumer asked at the start of the session.

The $60 billion in aid to Ukraine has been stalled in Congress for months amid growing opposition from conservative hardliners in both chambers, who consider it a waste and demand a withdrawal from the war.

“We still need to secure America’s borders before we send a dime overseas,” wrote Republican Senator Mike Lee in X.

The impasse means the United States has stopped sending arms to kyiv at a key moment in the nearly two-year conflict, while Putin’s forces relentlessly attack them.

The Ukrainian cause still has the support of many Republican senators, including their leader Mitch McConnell, but the problem is how to prepare a package capable of overcoming the obstacle in the lower house, which is controlled of the Republicans.

The package of funds for the border and for the allies – initially extended by the Republicans – tries to overcome the stumbling of Archicservers in the Chamber. But some Republican senators overruled him at the last minute.

War funds include $14 billion for Israel. It will invest in the creation of domestic defense, send funds to allies in Asia and $ 10 billion for humanitarian campaigns in Ukraine, Israel, Gaza and elsewhere.
