The US’s new nuclear bomber, the B-21 Raider, made its first flight test

The B-21 Raider made its first test flight on Friday, putting the futuristic fighter jet closer to becoming America’s next nuclear-armed stealth bomber.

The Raider flew in Palmdale, California, where it was tested and developed by Northrop Grumman.

The Air Force plans to build 100 of these fighter jets, which will have a flying wing shape similar to their predecessor, the B-2 Spirit, but will incorporate advanced materials, propulsion and stealth technology to make they are more likely to survive future conflicts. The aircraft is planned to be produced in piloted and pilotless variants.

“The B-21 Raider is in flight testing,” said Ann Stefanek, an Air Force spokeswoman.

Such tests are an important step in the campaign to provide “penetrative, long-range and survivable strike capabilities to deter strategic aggression and attack against the United States, its allies and partners, ” added Stefanek.

The B-21 Raider was the first new American bomber in more than 30 years, and almost every aspect of the program was secret. Northrop Grumman and the Air Force intend to protect the details of the program to prevent China from gaining access to the weapons technology and building a similar version, as it has done with other advanced US weapons systems, such as F fighter. -35 combined attack.

The B-21 is part of the Pentagon’s effort to modernize all three parts of its nuclear triad, which includes silo-launched nuclear ballistic missiles and submarine-fired warheads, while investing in new weapons to counter the rapid China’s military modernization.

Northrop Grumman Corp. located in Falls Church, Virginia.
