The Webb Telescope’s final stumbling block: its name

Sean O’Keeffe, the NASA administrator who named the telescope in 2002, said in an email that Webb was “a champion of education, technology, science, aeronautics and human research.”

“Perhaps if James Webb hadn’t chosen to embody the boldest vision of his time, our ability to explore today would have been very different,” said Mr. O’Keeffe. “He introduced the management of complex systems, a discipline that allowed NASA’s exceptional technical capabilities to be exploited at the time.” Mr. O’Keeffe added that he was not aware of any evidence that Webb was responsible for the lavender panic.

In May, NASA promised to conduct a full investigation into it by acting chief historian Brian Odom. On September 27, the agency released a statement from current NASA administrator Bill Nelson, which said: “At this time, we have not found any evidence to justify the name change for the James Webb Space Telescope.” Since then, there have been no detailed reports.

This infuriated many astronomers, and around 1200 signed a petition calling for the telescope to be renamed. “Under Webb’s leadership, queer people were persecuted,” the petition says in part. “Those who justify Webb’s failure in leadership cannot simultaneously do justice to him for leading Apollo.”

Upon hearing Mr. Nelson’s announcement, Dr. Valkovich abruptly left his post on NASA’s Astrophysics Advisory Committee. “This frivolous, pathetic answer to the very sensible questions raised by the astronomical community regarding the name of JWST clearly shows NASA’s position on the rights of queer astronomers,” they wrote in an online statement. “It also clearly tells me that NASA doesn’t deserve my time.”

In an email, Dr. Prescod-Weinstein said she was disappointed at the lack of the promised transparency. What’s more, she said, the “lack of evidence” claim was too strong because it suggested that Webb was not responsible for the homophobia – well-documented – that his team had proclaimed during his time at NASA.

“If he is not responsible for the bad things that happened while he was in power, why is he responsible for the good things?” said Dr. Prescod-Weinstein. “There seems to be a twofold mindset going on here, where people hold him accountable for what they like about his legacy and pretend he is only responsible for what they like.”
