Firefox has taken the title of fastest browser from Chrome by passing a test that unfortunately leaves more questions than answers.
Chrome is the most used web browser in the world with a market share of more than 60%. However, that doesn’t mean it’s the best in every way. In fact, there is one aspect in which Chrome has been outperformed by another browser: speed.
According to a study by Mozilla, Firefox is the fastest web browser in the world. Based on Chromium (the same engine as Chrome), this browser offers a faster, safer, and more private browsing experience than its competitors.
The SunSpider test consists of a series of tasks that simulate the actual use of JavaScript in web pages, such as DOM manipulation, encryption, compression or analysis.
The study compared the latest stable versions of both browsers (Firefox 92 and Chrome 93) on different operating systems (Windows 10, Ubuntu 21.04 and macOS 11.5) and on different processors (Intel Core i9-11900K, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and Apple M1). .
Chrome is not the fastest browser
The results showed that Firefox was faster than Chrome in all cases, with an average difference of 10%. In some cases the difference was up to 25%. The reason why Firefox is faster than Chrome in the SunSpider test This is due to the improvements Mozilla introduced in its JavaScript engine called SpiderMonkey.
This engine is responsible for interpreting and executing the JavaScript code found on web pages. Among the improvements that Mozilla has incorporated is the use of WebAssembly, a binary format that allows native code to be executed in the browser at a speed close to that of hardware.
Although Firefox emerged victorious in the tests, it must be taken into account that the test to which the browsers were subjected is ten years old and therefore is not very reliable in terms of results.
The choice of web browser largely depends on the preferences and needs of each user.. There is no perfect browser that fits all cases. It is therefore best to try out several browsers and compare their functions, advantages and disadvantages.
No browser is perfect, the only thing that needs to be taken into account is its use and whether it is able to adapt to the way each user browses.
