These are the 20 most common Mexican surnames abroad

Migrations and conquests changed the habits and customs of the people, as well as leaving their mark on their names. In this sense, we will tell you: What are the 20 last names of Mexicans abroad?.

And just by hearing the family names of a region, you know where they come from. In Mexico, the majority are from Spain, but there are also Italians and French, as well as those with exclusive Mayan origins.

Currently, there are approximately 12 million, 145 thousand, and 143 million Mexicans worldwide, most of them in the United States, according to the latest data from the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME).

What are the most commonly heard Mexican surnames abroad?

According to data for 2023 from the National Electoral Institute (INE), the 20 most common surnames of Mexicans abroad are:

  1. Hernández: 86 thousand 639 records in total (father: 44 thousand 677 and mother: 44 thousand 962)
  2. Garcia: 82 thousand 433 records in total (father: 40 thousand 999; mother: 41 thousand 434)

  12. Torres: 25,181 records in total (father: 12,503; mother: 12,678)
  13. GOMEZ: 24,593 total records (father: 12,319; mother: 12,274)
  14. Morales: 23,403 records in total (father: 11,591; mother: 11,812)
  15. Reyes: 22 thousand 131 records in total (father: 11 thousand 169; mother: 10 thousand 962)
  16. Vazquez: 21,384 records in total (father: 10,688; mother: 10,696)
  17. DIAZ: 20,510 records in total (father: 10,210; mother: 10,300)
  18. GUTIERREZ has 20,316 records in total (father: 10,286; mother: 10,30)
  19. Mendoza: 19,873 total records (father: 9,962; mother: 9,911)
  20. Jimenez: 9,629 records in total (only the first last name is counted)

In addition, the INE electoral roll includes 11,297 people without their mother’s last name abroad without specifying the region.

As expected, most of these family names match the most common in Mexico, where Hernández stands out with almost 8 million records (combining both nomenclatures).

The coincidence is due to the fact that the origin of most of these surnames is the father’s name (patronymics), and since the names are repeated, so are the surnames. So not all the Garcías are family members.
