These are the maximum expectations

The weather this week, and possibly until the end of this month, will be marked by a strong anticyclone that will be a record for these dates. This will lead to a long early spring period with temperatures more typical of March and close to any sign of rain across the country.

This Tuesday, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts high values for this time of the year that can exceed 20 degrees in Levante and parts of Andalusia, with clear skies except for some weak and occasional showers -rain in western Galicia.

High pressure will continue across the peninsula, with clear skies remaining, although the close passage of an Atlantic front will leave weak rain in the west of Galicia and cloud cover in the early hours of the day in the rest of the north of the peninsula, in the eastern Cantabrian Sea.

On the Atlantic slope, the valleys of the Tagus and Guadiana, La Mancha, the Iberian area, depressions in the northeast, the Balearic Islands, and Melilla, morning mists and fogs are expected, which may continue and have records that, one day, will be increased again across the board. . In addition, the entry of haze from the southeast of the Canary Islands will be recorded.

Temperatures will register very high values for these dates in some areas, especially in the east and south of the peninsula. Provincial capitals such as Valencia, Seville, Oviedo, Ourense, Murcia, Málaga, Jaén, Huelva, Granada, Córdoba, Cádiz, Bilbao, Almería, and Alicante will register maximum temperatures between 20 and 23 degrees. It will be cooler in León, Palencia, and Zamora, with a maximum of 12–13 degrees. At night, A Coruña will again register 14 degrees, followed by Almería, Donosti, Pontevedra, and Santander with 11 degrees. There is a weak frost limited only to the Pyrenees.

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday, the situation of anticyclonic stability will continue with almost no rain. If the forecasts are true, on Thursday the maximum temperature can rise to 27 degrees in Murcia and Valencia, to 25 degrees in Alicante, and to around 24 degrees in Seville.

On Friday, anticyclonic weather will continue across the country, with a predominance of partly cloudy or clear skies and no rain. However, the approach of the Atlantic front from the northwest will leave intervals of clouds in the northern half of the peninsula.

A historical figure

This is a severe winter ridge. Physicist and meteorologist González Alemán talks about “a record of 80 years, at least.” “This does not mean that it happened 80 years ago. It means that, at least, we know that it has not happened since there are strong, reliable records. But because of the context of global warming in which we are approaching the maximum for ~100 thousand years, it is unlikely that this type of dorsal events occurred for thousands of years,” said the expert of the social network X.

For González Alemán, the main problem is the increase in the frequency of this type of extreme anticyclonic ridge in the winter. “Little by little, they take over the winter climate, causing a devastating effect.”

We are talking about an anticyclonic ridge “that is not less than 594 dams of geopotential height in mid-January.” This means that the temperature of probably “the entire tropospheric column (and not just the atmospheric level) is extremely” record-setting for the season.
