They created the electric car with the most autonomy in the world

German students have developed an electric car that can travel 2,573 kilometers on a single battery charge. It consumes 0.6 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers and weighs only 170 kg. It shows that it is possible to create an electric car with exceptional autonomy and unparalleled energy efficiency.

Students at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have broken the Guinness World Record by traveling more than 2,573 kilometers for 99 hours in an electric car on a single battery charge.

The team modified the “muc022,” a vehicle they had previously used in electric efficiency competitions, and equipped it with a larger 15.5-kilowatt-hour battery.

The aerodynamic design and lightweight construction of the car enable consumption of just 0.6 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers. In comparison, the most economical electric vehicles on the market use around 13 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers.

Six days of negotiations

The record was set at Munich Airport, where the team had an empty hangar to avoid bad weather. The test lasted six days, with students sleeping on cots in the hangar.

The goal was to exceed the previous mark of 1,608.54 kilometers, which they achieved in just four days. Since the battery of the muc022 was not yet empty, the team continued driving until the specified kilometer record was reached.

The record was congratulated by the Bavarian Minister of Science, Markus Blumeand from the President of TUM, Thomas F. Hofmannwhich underlined the students’ pioneering spirit and ambition to contribute to the future of sustainable mobility.

The TUfast Eco team has shown that it is possible to develop an electric car with exceptional range and unparalleled energy efficiency.

Technical specifications

The muc022 boasts impressive technical specifications that place it at the forefront of innovation in the industry.

Without a driver it weighs 170kg, compared to 1,200kg for the average car, and has a very competitive battery. It is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with a power of 400W. Its surface area is 32.3 m2 and its drag coefficient is 0.48 and its drag coefficient (cW) is 0.159.

This data illustrates the performance and efficiency of the muc022, which uses significantly less energy than other electric cars on the market.

Insightful examples

For example, according to data from the Climate Consulting website, the Renault Zoé consumes 10.3 kWh per 100 km; The Kia e-Niro uses 13.5 kWh per 100 km, the Volkswagen ID.3 uses 15.4 kWh per 100 km and the Tesla Model 3 uses 16 kWh per 100 km.

These cars have a longer range than the muc022, but also a larger battery and a higher weight. Therefore, the muc022 is an ideal electric car for short and medium trips with minimal energy consumption.

Collective work

The muc022 electric car is the result of the joint work of TUM students and their external cooperation partners. These include companies such as BMW, BASF, Continental and Siemens, which have contributed their experience and resources to support the project.

Institutions such as Greenpeace, WWF and UNESCO, which recognized the ecological and social value of the muc022 electric car, were also involved.

Technological model

The muc022 electric car is an example of how science and technology can help improve people’s quality of life and protect the environment.

According to the aforementioned university, TUM students have demonstrated their talent and commitment to sustainable development and inspired others to follow in their footsteps. The muc022 is an example of what the future has in store for us.

It is still too early to say whether muc022 has the possibility of developing into a car that can be marketed or whether it will just be a prototype that requires technological developments so that it can be used by many people .

Promising for the market

What we know is that this is a research and innovation project that is intended to show the possibilities of sustainable and efficient electromobility.

According to the TUfast Eco team website, the muc022 is the result of more than 18 months of development, design, manufacturing and testing and has successfully participated in the Shell Eco-marathon 2022 energy efficiency competition.

Although the muc022 has some very advanced features, it also has some limitations such as: B. a very low top speed and loading capacity that make it impractical for everyday use.

Therefore, the muc022 is a very interesting electric car from a scientific and technical perspective, but it is still a long way from being a marketable product.

Perhaps in the future some of its principles and solutions could be applied to other more conventional electric cars or new models could be developed based on the muc022 that are better suited to the market, the developers say in a statement.
