According to reports on social networks by the Cuban feminist platform YoSíTeCreo en Cuba, a woman in her 60s was murdered by her partner at dawn on May 24 in the Luano neighborhood, in the Havana municipality of Díaz de Octubre.
“We regret Tomasa’s feminism, as far as we’ve been able to go, her last name may be Vargas,” reported a note published by the above source on Facebook.
The publication also made reference to another femicide attempt, in which other details were not disclosed to avoid “stigma and discrimination” for the victim.
The forum concluded, “Our sympathies extend to Tomasa’s family and we wish the victim of the attempted femicide a speedy recovery.”

Following the recent reports, 29 cases of femicide and one of attempted femicide have been registered this year.
This figure is approaching 34 such crimes reported in 2022.
In view of the significant increase in murders of women in the country, the said feminist platform launched a telephone helpline for those affected by gender violence at the beginning of the year. People who need it can get counselling, legal advice and psychological support on phone 52652798.
In February, a total of 14 civil society organizations made a third call for the Cuban regime to declare a state of emergency due to gender violence. Similar alerts were made in 2021 and 2022 without receiving a response from government officials.
In recent days it was reported that Cuban courts have sentenced 18 men who murdered women during 2022, according to official figures, a figure well below the 34 acts of this nature documented by independent platforms.
