This England: Boris Johnson'S Portrayal Of Kenneth Branagh Revealed In First Clip Of New Sky Drama

Sky Atlantic has released a first-look teaser for its new drama This England, which stars Kenneth Branagh as Boris Johnson.

The show, formerly known as “This Septred Isle”, is based on the UK prime minister’s first months in Downing Street and sees him attempt to steer Britain through the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sky’s official synopsis reads: “The drama takes us inside the halls of power, as Johnson (Braanagh) grapples with COVID-19, Brexit and a contentious personal and political life.

“Government events are intertwined with stories from around the UK, from experts and scientists racing against time to understand the virus; Doctors, nurses and care-home workers are working tirelessly and heroically to control and overcome it; and ordinary people whose lives were in turmoil.”

In Johnson’s signature stumbling, humming, Etonian voice, Branagh can be heard saying at one point in the clip: “The best thing we can do is wash our hands…”

Another unnamed character declared in voiceover: “I think Johnson will regret securing the premiership.”

The series is co-written and directed by Michael Winterbottom, whose previous credits include the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon comedy The Trip, as well as the money satire Greed.

It also stars Ophelia Lovibond as Johnson’s wife, Carrie, and Andrew Buchan as Matt Hancock.

After news of the project broke earlier this year, many took to social media to object to its premise, calling it “inappropriate” to make the show while the pandemic was still going on.

“People are still holding headstones from the first wave,” wrote one Twitter user. “Please don’t release it.”

Adam White of The Independent wrote: “We still live in an era of deep misery and massive government incompetence – who would want to see it again with an ad break?”

It will air on Sky in the autumn of England 2022.
