On September 8, the miniseries aired ‘The Body is on Fire’ on Netflix, starring Ursula Corberó and Quim Gutiérrez, who play Rosa Peral and Albert López, respectively.
The story is based on the killing of Pedro Rodriguezbetter, known as the ‘City Police crime’, which happened on May 4, 2017, when the burnt body of a Barcelona City Police agent was found in a burnt car.
The jury trial process began on February 3, 2020. Pear RosePedro’s partner since 2016, and his lover, Albert Lopez (both are also Barcelona Urban Guard agents). They face charges of murdering Rodríguez in the early morning hours of May 1, 2017. Peral was previously married and had two daughters. Their marriage ended because of Rosa’s various infidelities, one of them being Albert López.
During the course of the trial, the two accused pointed fingers at each other. Rosa Albert López of killing her boyfriend out of jealousy, while López accused Peral of committing the homicide, saying that he had previously been attacked by the victim and that he later asked for help disposing of the body. The prosecution maintains that the two murdered as part of a premeditated plan, as they had a relationship before and intended to continue it by eliminating Peral’s current partner. As a result, the prosecution requested 24 years in prison for López and 25 years for Peral, accusing them of murder with treachery and aggravated relations.
At the end of March 2020, after six days of deliberation, eight out of ten members of the famous jury concluded that Peral and López were guilty of the malicious murder of Pedro Rodríguez.
The sentence at the end determines that the lovers They have been in a relationship for several years, starting in 2012. After a p of separation, in 2017 their love was renewed, while Rosa Peral was also in a relationship with the victim, with whom he lived for less than six months at the time of the events. As detailed in the text, “on the night of May 1 to 2” three years ago, the defendants communicated through calls, expecting that Rodríguez was unconscious or “asleep.”
“At an unspecified time in the morning, one of the two or both were attacked and killed” and then they moved the body in the trunk of their car to a forest track in the Foix Reservoir. There, “using a type of gasoline, they set fire to the car with the victim’s body inside, resulting in the body being almost completely burned due to the action of the flames, with no remains or signs of the violent cause of the death remaining,”, concludes the document.
As a result, the sentences of 25 years in prison for Peral and 20 years for López. In addition, those convicted were ordered to pay compensation of 885,000 euros to the victim’s family. Although both faced the same case, Rosa Peral received an additional sentence of five years due to the aggravating circumstances of kinship. The convicts appealed against the sentence but were unsuccessful. The Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia and the Supreme Court confirmed the sentence.
