The Semifinals of the Apertura 2023 tournament of the MX Expansion League were defined after the victory of Mineros de Zacatecas against Tepatitlán (4-2). The Miners will be in charge of facing the leader of the general table, Cancún FC, while the other Semifinal will feature the Colts of Iron of Atlante who will face the Leones Negros of the University of Guadalajara.
How will the Expansion Semis be played?
The Colts of Iron of Atlante will visit the Jalisco Stadium, before receiving the Leones Negros of U de G at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium. The team from Mexico City reached the Semifinals after defeating the Cimarrones of Sonora with a total score of (4-4). Although Atlante started by losing the second leg, the team came back thanks to a double from Rafael Durán and two more goals from Edwin Cerna and Ronaldo González.
For their part, Leones Negros suffered a painful defeat in the first leg of the Quarterfinals against Atlético Morelia (2-1). However, the Guadalajara squad managed to change course with an impressive home win with goals from Carlos Fierro and Edson Torres. Leonardo Martínez missed a penalty, however, the Jalisco team sealed their ticket to the Semifinals.
The leader or the surprise?
For its part, the outstanding team of Cancún FC will be at the Carlos Vega Villalba Stadium in Zacatecas and will later receive the Mineros at the Andrés Quintana Roo Olympic Stadium. The leaders of the general table fell in their visit to Mérida against Venados (0-1) and despite starting to lose the Vuelta duel, the Iguanas came back with points from Raúl Castillo and Arturo Sánchez.
On the other side of the coin, Mineros de Zacatecas dominated with ease in the first leg of the Quarterfinals against Tepatitlán (0-2). While the Vuelta ended a festival of goals (5-2), starring Luis Razo, Diether Vásquez, Horacio Torres and Juan Blanco with a double.
