This is the boom in arms sales from the US to Mexico

The sale of arms from the United States to Mexico is an issue that, although addressed by the two governments, has not stopped, a situation that the “boom” undoubtedly experienced during the failed and secret operation. “Fast and Fury, which was launched in 2009 by the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (AFT), allowed the purchase of more than 2,500 weapons in the United States to follow their path to Mexico, which ended up in the hands of drugs about the cartel.

Mexico has been fighting to stop arms sales, mainly from the United States. In one of the new cases, the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled in favor of the Mexican government, which sued the arms manufacturing company. Although the case still needs to be discussed and analyzed within American law,

Controversial “Fast and Furious” operation

The sale of weapons allowed under the framework of “Fast and Furious” has unleashed a wave of violence in cartels, who not only fight each other but also with Mexican law enforcement during anti-drug operations. Violence in Mexican territory has increased.

According to the plans of the AFT, DEA, and FBI, who are involved in the operation, the objective is to follow the path of weapons purchased in the United States and to follow the route of Mexico, where the weapons reach organized crime and thus find arms traffickers, but according to the authority of their own Americans, the operation had flaws from its conception and subsequent implementation.

More than 2,500 firearms entered Mexico illegally

The weapons involved have a chip for tracking; even if the arms trade in Mexico is 2,500, not all of them are traceable, and according to official reports, more than a thousand were lost.

The first result is the detection of the purchase of weapons in a store where a person bought several AK-4 rifles. Investigations noted a general purchase of 212 weapons by the same people.

However, the operation began to lose control when an agent was identified as Brian Terry. He died after being hit by a bullet from an AK-47 rifle, a weapon belonging to the AFT operation.

The “Fast and Furious” operation ran between 2009 and 2011 until it came to light due to the revelations of WikiLeaks, which caused a political and security scandal in the United States and Mexico.

The Mexican government said it was surprised by the existence of “Fast and Furious,” but the United States assured that the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) was aware of the US operation all along.

In 2011, prosecutors in Arizona arrested 11 people they accused of trafficking guns, known as the “Fast and Furious” operation.

Although in 2019 the United States government closed the case of “Fast and Fury, the chancellor immediately sent a diplomatic note to the US government.

“If in fact, the Mexican government knew and allowed the operation then we will be talking about serious violations of the Political Constitution and the laws that come from it by those who occupy the highest positions in the country for lying they are in the Congress of the Union and society”, said the chancellor.

Ebrard filed lawsuits before the courts of the United States to strengthen the measures for the purchase of weapons that would eventually go to the Mexican drug cartels.

There have been many attempts by the Mexican government, in different administrations, to stop illegal arms sales into national territory, but no strategy has solved the problem.
