Tigres and Club América have held a series of friendlies against European leaders Real Madrid and Barcelona FC. Despite a 3-2 win over Real Madrid, América was unable to keep up in the league game against the mighty Tigres.
In Liga MX Female action on day 9, Tigres ruined America’s perfect season. Tigres now sits at the top of the table with eight wins and one draw, while América is second with eight wins and one loss. A point separates the two teams, with little margin in the goal difference column; the Tigres have a narrow four-goal advantage.
America hosted the game, and the reigning champions came into play. Katty Martnez found the net first in the 22nd minute thanks to a cut-back and a hit from the top of the box. Teammate Kiana Palacios led the breakaway but failed to execute the shot herself and sent it to Martnez on the other side of the box.
Lydia Rangel equalized in the 41st minute with a header from a corner kick for Tigres. Belén Cruz gave the visitors the lead in the 44th minute with a great shot from the edge of the box.
The third and final goal—a converted penalty—came from Lizbeth Ovalle. It was her 95th goal—and a historic one. She is now the club’s all-time leading scorer. Ovalle has spent her entire career at Tigres and joined the team in 2017.
The win will give Tigres his usual confidence for easier (on paper) games against Club León and Querétaro. Tigres have previously faced Pachuca, Chivas, and CF Monterrey, among other notable teams.
For América, the reigning champions only have a harder time going the rest of the way and still have to play against Chivas, Pachuca, and Monterrey. In fact, Club America is playing against Chivas day 10 and Pachuca in day 11
It’s also just their luck that America will end the regular season away against Monterrey.
