by Sheila Dango

September 21 – TikTok will begin requiring verification of accounts of government departments, politicians and political parties in the United States and banning campaign fundraising videos, the short video app said on Wednesday.

The move comes at a time when Chinese company ByteDance-owned TikTok and other social media platforms are working to crack down on political propaganda ahead of the US midterm elections in November. on their services.

TikTok said political accounts can submit a verification request, and the company will also work to verify the authenticity of profiles belonging to politicians or political parties.

A verified account, represented by a blue check mark on TikTok and other platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, means that the platform has confirmed ownership of the account.

TikTok has long faced scrutiny from US Congressmen, who have questioned the security of the Chinese-owned app’s user data.

The app has also tried to preserve its image for dance and comedy videos and has banned political advertising from 2019.

TikTok said in a blog post that to help enforce the ban, accounts of politicians and parties will be automatically blocked from accessing advertising features.

TikTok said it would update its policies to ban fundraising for the campaign. Content to be banned under the new policy includes videos by politicians soliciting donations or by political parties instructing users to donate on their websites.

Accounts will also be banned from using fundraising features available to influencers on apps like digital payments and giveaways.
