As if it were nonsense, just over eight years ago the Venezuelan basketball team achieved its second historic qualification for an Olympic Games in this industry and it happened, nothing more and nothing less than against Canada, the same rival they will face today, Sunday February 26, facing each other.

In that mythical FIBA Americas in Mexico (pre-Olympic), Venezuela achieved the feat of beating favorite Canada, a team full of NBA players and that was a wide contender to win the tournament played in Mexico.
The game saw a thrilling fourth period, highlighted by Heissler Guillet’s triple and a free-kick converted by Gregory Vargas that put the Creoles ahead 79-78, securing victory to send Venezuela back to the Olympics after 23 year.

The top scorers for Venezuela in that game were Windi Graterol who finished with 20 points, closely followed by Heissler Guillent who cleared 19 points. Later on, Venezuela would contest the title against Argentina, eventually taking their first trophy of its kind by defeating the Southerners by a score of 76-71.
