One survey found that outdated software is the biggest technology challenge for construction workers with construction businesses (on average) losing 101 days a year to outdated laptops, hardware or technology.

From outdated tools to legacy platforms that no longer serve a purpose and processes that are not aligned across a company, software development company Propel surveyed UK office workers to determine their daily challenges with technology.

The research revealed that a quarter (25%) of property and construction workers admitted that outdated software causes everyday challenges at work.

They also revealed that, on average, they waste 39% of work days per year due to challenges with outdated software and technology, and an additional 85 days due to system integration issues. For SMBs in particular, this can be highly detrimental, leading to an incredible potential loss of revenue.

Here are the top 10 challenges property and construction face when it comes to technology:

  • workload (28%)
  • Outdated software (25%)
  • integration issues (25%)
  • software update (22%)
  • Understanding new system capabilities (19%)
  • processing speed (17%)
  • cyber security privacy (17%)
  • Frustrated users (14%)
  • System Control (14%)
  • technical skills gap (14%)

New research also indicates that a quarter (25%) of property and construction workers admit that systems integration creates everyday challenges on the job. Similarly, when developing or integrating software, nearly one in five (19%) employees have difficulty understanding the new capabilities of that software.

The survey also revealed that more than one in six construction companies (17%) had not updated their software for two to three years, and 6% admitted that they had not updated their software for five years or more. Software was not implemented.

Andy Brown, CEO and co-owner of Propel, says, “As a company, we spend a lot of our time improving business efficiencies and best practices across property and construction organisations, but I am still amazed at how much time we lost due to IT issues. Technology is now the heartbeat of every organization, and monitoring and improving IT efficiency is an easy way to improve business performance and should deliver a clear return on investment.
