Toyota Australia has unveiled an all-electric concept version of its popular Hilux pickup. The Hilux Revo BEV Concept, equipped with a 64 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, is currently being tested on site. Although there are no immediate plans to launch it as a production model, Toyota is optimistic about the potential for an electric Hilux in the future.
The Hilux Revo BEV Concept is a city-focused short-haul vehicle that showcases Toyota’s advanced battery electric vehicle technology. Compared to the current diesel Hilux, the electric version would be emission-free without sacrificing performance. While there are few specific details about the concept, Toyota has hinted that there is innovative technology under the hood.
In terms of range, the Hilux Revo BEV Concept is estimated to be around 256 km, similar to other electric pickups currently available in Australia. However, Toyota is aiming to develop an electric Hilux with a range that matches or exceeds the diesel version’s range of 800 km. To achieve this goal, the company is evaluating various options, including solid state batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.
Toyota’s focus on electric vehicles and alternative powertrains extends beyond the Hilux. The company has long been a proponent of hydrogen fuel cell technology and plans to introduce more hybrid vehicles in the future. While there is no definitive timeline for producing an electric Hilux, Toyota remains committed to delivering a vehicle that meets consumer needs for towing capacity, off-road capability and range.
