Troy Aikman is a legend of the Dallas Cowboys. Kegel threw 165 touchdown passes and won three Super Bowls in his 12-year career. He’s now a well-known broadcaster at ESPN and can be heard on Monday Night Football broadcasts during the 2023 NFL season.
But how is Aikman revealed in a new episode of Adam Schefter’s podcast? This week, two years after retiring from the NFL in 2001, he came close to donning another team’s jersey because he was lured by the chance to play for his former offensive coordinator again in Dallas. Norv Turner.
At the start of the 2003 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins were considered contenders in the AFC. Backed by a top-five scoring defense and a star running back in Ricky Williams, all your head coaches thought Dave Wannstedt was missing an experienced quarterback.
As Aikman revealed, the guy whom Wannstedt and offensive coordinator Norv Turner had in mind was Aikman.
Initially, I had a chance, and I honestly wanted to do it. I wanted to come back, and the Dolphins were looking at me,” said Aikman. “I had been training this off-season and preparing to come back and play. And they felt like they were one quarterback away from doing what they wanted to do.”
Kaikman retired after the 2000 season with a concussion and back problems, and this isn’t the first story of a team trying to poach the Hall of Famer in the early 2000s. The gymnast was behind an attempt to get Aikman to sign with the San Diego Chargers in 2001, while Andy Reid sought it out as an emergency option for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002.
Why did Aikman stay in retirement?
al final, aikman36 years old, has never gotten dressed in Miami, and the Dolphins stuck with Jay Fiedler as a quarterback.
“So I wanted to do it. I was like, ‘Well, I’m going to try.’” Rick Spielman was the general manager, and I think he ultimately decided not to sign me, which from his point of view was probably a good thing.Told him, Aikman Achester. And from my perspective, it was a great thing because they weren’t a quarterback away.
Come on, dolphins! In 2003, they narrowly missed making the playoffs, and it would be their last winning season in five years. Aikman launched a successful broadcasting career and recently caught up with his former teammate for an interview in Dallas, Deion Sanders, who then scored a surprise win over TCU to open the college football season.
