Trump sues New York attorney general alleging political animosity

Former President Donald Trump sued New York Attorney General Letitia James on December 20, accusing him of targeting him with politically motivated indictments.

The lawsuit (PDF), filed in federal court for the Northern District of New York, seeks an order for James to halt or limit his office’s investigation into Trump.

“Over the years, he has openly abused his investigative powers to target his political opponents and advance his career,” the complaint said. “His relentless attacks on Donald J. Trump serve as a prime example. Since taking office, he has embarked on a bitter crusade to ‘take on’ the president, with unjustified summons, for him, his family, and his business. , has relentlessly bombarded the Trump Organization LLC.

The attorney general’s office responded to the lawsuit, saying Trump was using it to attack and delay the office’s inquiries into the Trump Organization’s business deals.

“To be clear, neither Mr. Trump nor the Trump Organization gets to decide whether they will answer for their actions,” James said in a statement. “Our investigation will continue unabated because no one is above the law, not even someone named Trump.”

In a separate statement released Monday, Trump said his trial is “not about delay” and that the James investigation is “a continuation of the political witch hunt that has been going on for years by Radical Left Democrats against me.”

Trump’s lawsuit details a list of instances in which James expressed prejudice and animosity against Trump, beginning with comments made shortly after his inauguration in 2017. Quoted statements include James’ declaration that “we are all going to be killed by this (Trump) administration.”

Ten months into Trump’s term, James said, “I am leading the resistance against Donald Trump in NYC and will continue to do so in every way possible,” the lawsuit states.

The Attorney General of New York is investigating four of Trump’s properties in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Trump previously filed a similar challenge against New York City District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., who is conducting a separate investigation into Trump’s business. That challenge extended to the Supreme Court, which rejected Trump’s application in February of this year.
