Former President Donald Trump announced a massive rally in Wyoming on Monday, demanding the removal of Rep. Liz Cheney for promoting Republican challenger Harriet Heisman.
Trump’s Save America PAC said the rally will take place in Casper, Va., on Saturday, May 28.
Heijman, a lawyer, and Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, face off on Aug. 16 in the nation’s least populous state.
Cheney was the No. 3 House Republican until she was ousted last year in retaliation for her persistent criticism of Trump. His House aides initially stood by him after he joined nine other Republicans in the vote to impeach Trump for allegedly inciting last year’s Capitol riot, but his continued rebuke of the former president turned sour. .
Cheney later joined a Democrat-led committee investigating the riots. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) rejects a pro-Trump Republican nominated to the panel by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
Trump and Cheney clashed over foreign policy during his four-year term – with Trump advocating an “America first” mantra, which included funding allies to defend his defense.
In December 2020, Trump partially vetoed a $740 billion defense bill due to Cheney-imposed sanctions on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, Germany and South Korea.
Trump regularly refers to Cheney and his father as “warmongers” and has attacked them by name in a speech to his supporters before storming the Capitol to obstruct the validation of President Biden’s victory at the Electoral College. attacked.
“We have to get rid of weak congressmen who are no good to the Liz Cheney of the world. We have to get rid of them. We have to get rid of — you know, she never wants a soldier to bring home.” Trump said.
There isn’t much public voting in the Wyoming race, which makes it difficult to predict the likely outcome.
In a straw poll conducted in January by the Wyoming Republican State Central Committee, however, Heijman held the lead with 59 votes to Cheney’s six.
The election can have significant long-term implications. Cheney told The Post in an exclusive interview last year that she might one day run for president.
Some Democrats also see Cheney as a potential running mate for Biden in 2024. In January, Vice President Kamala Harris slammed “gossip” that Biden might replace her on the Democratic ticket with someone else, like Cheney.
