(CNN) — A person familiar with the situation told CNN that two documents with classified markings were found in a Florida storage unit during a search by a team hired by former President Donald Trump’s lawyers.
Those documents were turned over to the FBI. The source said no other documents with classified markings were found during searches of four of Trump’s properties.
The discovery of the documents was first reported by The Washington Post.
The two-man team searched Trump Tower, the Bedminster Golf Club and two other properties in New York amid concerns from the Justice Department that not all documents had been returned to the federal government.
The source said Trump’s legal team was overseeing four searches in recent weeks. Trump’s lawyers offered to let federal investigators search his Bedminster property, but that offer was turned down. Given the Justice Department’s response, Trump’s lawyers did not make a similar proposal to search other properties.
It would be highly unusual for the Justice Department to look at searches that are not conducted by law enforcement. The department declined to comment.
It is unknown what contact has taken place between Trump’s legal team and federal investigators since the records were released. The source did not say what he told the Justice Department about the search, but said he did not testify to the Justice Department that no new material was found during the search.
The Justice Department has appointed a special prosecutor to oversee the investigation of Mar-a-Lago and January 6.
CNN previously reported exclusively that Trump’s legal team is considering allowing federal agents to search Mar-a-Lago again to meet Justice’s demands that all sensitive government documents be returned. to be done. The matter was addressed in a court proceeding this fall in which the Justice Department asked a judge to issue an order forcing Trump’s team to conduct another raid.
