The Ministry’s statement stressed that they closely follow all developments in the field of defense and security in the region. This comes in response to a report by Foreign Policy on Wednesday, which indicated that the Biden administration will reconsider its military priorities in the region, especially given the rise in tension created by the ongoing conflict. between Israel and Hamas.

This report also suggests that the White House no longer considers the mission in Syria necessary and that a withdrawal is being considered. This possible scenario worries about the impact it could have on the security situation in Syria, especially in relation to the militant group Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which, although weak, could seek a resurgence if there is a sudden. retreat of American forces.

The United States currently has 900 troops in Syria and is working with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is mainly made up of Kurds, in the fight against ISIL. Adding to the complexity is Turkey’s position on Kurdish militant groups in Syria, such as the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), as it views these entities as an extension of the classified Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as a terrorist organization.
