ATLANTA ( Associated Press) — Freddie Freeman was smiling after a long emotional day.
At the end of a night full of tears, Freeman was happy because he was pleased to show his appreciation to the Atlanta fans and play well for his new Los Angeles team.
Trea Turner had three hits, including a home run, Freeman hit base three times on his return to Atlanta, and the Dodgers beat the Braves 4-1 on Friday in a rematch of the last two NL championships.
“I’m drained, emotionally drained, but what a wonderful evening for my family,” Freeman said.
Dodgers forward Daniel Hudson came out eighth due to what manager Dave Roberts said was a season-ending left knee injury. Roberts said that Hudson had torn his anterior cruciate ligament.
The loss of Hudson deprived the player of the best installers. Hudson, who has five saves and a 2.22 ERA, fell to the ground as he tried to respond to a dribbler from Ronald Acuna Jr. who was reaching for the infield.
Before the game, the Dodgers received more bad news when left-hander Andrew Heaney was placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation.
Before the game and before his first fight, Freeman received a standing ovation from a crowd of 42,105. The longtime Braves star had one hit, a single in the sixth inning. He walked twice and scored two runs.
“It’s hard to describe how I felt at that moment,” Freeman said of his first standing ovation. “Just a lot of love.”
Freeman received his 2021 World Series ring from Braves manager Brian Snitker at a pre-game ceremony. Slugger raised his cap, raised his hands to the crowd and said that he also tries to spend as much time as possible signing autographs before a game.
Julio Urias (5-6) gave the Braves only their fourth loss in June, allowing one three-hit streak with nine strikeouts in six innings.
“We know how good they are,” Urias said through a translator. “We know how powerful their attack can be. We came up with a plan and executed it.”
Snitker said he was impressed that Urias “never stopped serving” even as he began to tire in the sixth round.
The Braves, who were four games behind the No. 1 New York Mets in the NL East, fell to 18-4 this month.
Turner started the game on a single and scored on Will Smith’s single. Freeman passed and scored on Justin Turner’s sacrificial fly.
Trea Turner hit his 10th homer in the fifth, giving him three hits for the second straight game.
Freeman, the 2020 NL MVP, was overwhelmed at the pre-game press conference when he said: “I love the Braves organization with all my heart. This will never change.”
The first baseman signed a six-year, $162 million contract with the Dodgers during the off-season after failing to reach an agreement with the Braves.
The Braves loaded bases against Urias in the sixth. Acuña reached for an infield kick, moved to third on Dansby Swanson’s single and scored a goal on Matt Olson’s sacrificial fly. Urias struck out Marcella Ozuna to finish the pitch.
Right-hander Brousdar Graterol, who replaced Hudson in eighth, drove Acuna to third base as Austin Riley started a double play.
WALKING LEADS TO LOSSES
Braves right-hander Ian Anderson (6-4) struggled with his control as he allowed four runs in four-plus innings and suffered his first loss since May 22. eggs.
Snitker said that Anderson was “a little lost” by giving up two runs on two hits and two walks on the first. “I was just hoping to get another inning from him,” Snitker said.
Olson, replacing Atlanta’s Freeman, topped ninth with his second hit single. Dodgers closer Craig Kimbrel recovered from three quick strikeouts to earn his 13th save in 14 chances.
Dodgers: RHP Reyes Moronta was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City after Heaney was placed on the injured list. RHP Mitch White will be recalled to start Saturday night’s game. Roberts said Heaney felt soreness in his shoulder while throwing into the bullpen on Thursday and will be closed for a few days. “I don’t think it’s going to be long,” Roberts said.
Braves LHP Max Fried (7-2, 2.77 ERA) will start against White (1-1, 3.86). White appeared in nine games, including four starts, for Los Angeles. Freed is 2-2 with a 3.30 ERA in six career regular season starts against the Dodgers.
