Turner homers, Dodgers stop Braves 4-1 in Freeman’s comeback

ATLANTA ( Associated Press) — Trea Turner had three hits, including a home run, Freddie Freeman hit base three times in his emotional comeback to Atlanta, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Braves 4-1 on Friday night.

Julio Urias (5-6) gave the Braves only their fourth loss in June, allowing one three-hit streak with nine strikeouts in six innings.

The Braves, who were four games behind the No. 1 New York Mets in the NL East, fell to 18-4 this month.

The Dodgers took in the bad news for their pitcher before and during the game. Left-hander Andrew Heaney was listed as a 10-day injury with left shoulder inflammation. Right-hander Daniel Hudson came out in the eighth with an obvious left knee injury.

Matt Olson topped ninth with his second hit single. Dodgers closer Craig Kimbrel recovered from three quick strikeouts to earn his 13th save in 14 chances.

Freeman was the focus of the NL West leaders during his long-awaited return to Atlanta.

The veteran slugger had one hit, a single in the sixth inning. He walked twice and scored two runs. Freeman, the 2020 NL MVP who helped the Braves win the World Series championship last season, received a standing ovation from a sell-out crowd of 42,105 before the game and prior to his first at-bat.

Freeman was overwhelmed at the pre-game press conference when he said, “I love the Braves organization with all my heart. This will never change.”

Freeman shed more tears when the Braves manager presented him with a World Series ring before the game.

The star first baseman signed a six-year, $162 million contract with the Dodgers during the offseason after failing to reach an agreement with the Braves.

Turner started the game on a single and scored on Will Smith’s single. Freeman passed and scored on Justin Turner’s sacrificial fly.

Trea Turner hit his 10th homer in the fifth, giving him three hits for the second straight game.

The Braves loaded bases against Urias in the sixth. Ronald Acuña, Jr. reached for an infield kick, moved to third on Swanson’s Dansby single, and scored a goal on Olson’s sacrificial fly. Urias struck out Marcella Ozuna to finish the pitch.

Right-hander Brousdar Graterol, who replaced Hudson in eighth, drove Acuna to third base as Austin Riley started a double play.

Braves right-hander Ian Anderson (6-4) struggled with his control as he allowed four runs in four-plus innings and suffered his first loss since May 22. eggs.

COACH ROOM

Dodgers: Hudson was able to walk off the field with obvious discomfort. He fell to the ground, trying to react to the blow of Akunya, who reached for the infield. … RHP Reyes Moronta was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City after Heaney was placed on the injured list. RHP Mitch White will be recalled to start Saturday night’s game. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Heaney felt pain in his shoulder during Thursday’s bullpen game and will be closed for several days. “I don’t think it’s going to be long,” Roberts said.

NEXT

Braves LHP Max Fried (7-2, 2.77 ERA) will start against White (1-1, 3.86). White appeared in nine games, including four starts, for Los Angeles. Freed is 2-2 with a 3.30 ERA in six career starts against the Dodgers.
