New Delhi: Twitter, a leading social media site, wrote to the government to inform it that it is in the process of appointing a compliance officer under new information technology standards and further details will be provided to the government within a week. An official source gave this information.

Twitter, in response to the government’s final notice dated June 5, said it was doing everything possible to comply with the new guidelines but had not done so due to the global impact of the COVID pandemic -19. “We are in the final stages of finalizing the appointment of a compliance officer and will provide you with further details over the next few days and at most within a week,” Twitter said.

According to the source, Twitter sent this letter to the Department of Electronics and Information Technology on June 7. When contacted, a Twitter spokesperson said: “Twitter has always been and will remain deeply committed to India and will continue to host important public discussions on this platform. We assured the Indian government that Twitter is doing everything it can to comply with the new guidelines and we shared with them a snapshot of our progress. We will continue our positive discussions with the Indian government. “

Significantly, the government had announced new IT rules for social media companies, which went into effect last month. Under the new rules, major social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will need to take additional action. This includes the appointment of the Chief Compliance Officer, Node Manager and Grievance Manager in India etc.

Major social media platforms have had three months to comply with the new rules. In this category, social media platforms are kept, the number of registered users of which exceeds 50 lakhs. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in its latest Twitter advisory, said that Twitter’s refusal to comply with these rules shows that the micro blogging site lacks commitment and does not allow it is not for the Indians to secure access to its platform. I don’t want to try to provide experience.

The ministry had said that although these rules are effective from May 26, 2021, but in good faith, Twitter Inc has the option of complying with the rules through a final notice. He must immediately comply with the rules. In the event of failure, the exoneration of responsibility which it benefited from will be lost. In addition, he must be prepared to act under the Computer Law and other criminal provisions.
