UK PM Election 2022: If Sunak wins, Britain will be the 11th country with an Indian-origin head of state, still holding power in 6 countries

New Delhi, Online Desk. In Britain, the third round of voting was held on Monday for the race for the post of Prime Minister (British PM Election 2022). Another candidate was eliminated in the third round. Now only four contenders including Rishi Sunak are left in the race for PM. Among them, Rishi Sunak is at the forefront. If he is elected PM, the UK will be the 11th country where people of Indian origin have reached the top of power. Here we are providing you information about these politicians of Indian origin.

So far, in 10 countries of the world, people of Indian origin have held the reins of power as Prime Minister or President 31 times. Of these, there are six countries where there are still heads of state of Indian origin. Politicians of Indian origin have held power in Mauritius for the maximum 10 times. It was started in Mauritius in the year 1968. On 12 March 1968, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam formed the government as the Prime Minister for the first time. He remained in power for 14 consecutive years and 110 days till 30 June 1982. Ramgoolam was the first Indian-origin leader to hold the reins of power in any other country.

Mauritius (Indian Origin Politicians in Mauritius)

1. Seewoosagur Ramgoolam: From 12 March 1968 to 30 June 1982, he was the Prime Minister of Mauritius for a total of 14 years and 110 days.

2. Anerood Jugnauth: From June 1982 to December 22, 1995, from September 17, 2000 to September 30, 2003 and from December 17, 2014 to January 23, 2017, he was the Prime Minister for a total of 18 years 239 days. After this, from 7 October 2003 to 31 March 2012, he was also the President of Mauritius for a total of eight years 176 days.

3. Veerasamy Ringadoo: President of Mauritius for 110 days from 12 March 1992 to 30 June 1992.

4. Cassam Uteem: From 30 June 1992 to 15 February 2002, he was the President of Mauritius for a total of nine years 230 days.

5. Navin Ramgoolam: From 27 December 1995 to 11 September 2000 and 05 July 2005 to 17 December 2014, became the Prime Minister for a total of 14 years 59 days.

6. Kailash Purryag: From 21 July 2012 to 29 May 2015, he became the President for two years 312 days.

7. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim: Became President for two years 291 days from 05 June 2015 to 23 March 2018.

8. Pravind Jugnauth: From 23 January 2017 to the present, he has been the Prime Minister of Mauritius for almost five years 160 days.

9. Prithvirajsingh Roopun: From December 2, 2019 to the present, he has been in the country’s presidency for almost two years, 212 days.

Suriname (Indian Origin Politicians in Suriname)

1. Fred Ramdat Misier: From 8 February 1982 to 25 January 1988, he was in office for a total of five years 351 days.

2. Errol Alibux: From 26 February 1983 to 8 January 1984, he was Prime Minister for 316 days.

3. Pretaap Radhakishun: From 17 July 1986 to 7 April 1987, he became the Prime Minister for a total of 264 days.

4. Ramsevak Shankar: From 25 January 1988 to 24 December 1990, he was the President for a total of two years 333.

5. Chan Santokhi: From July 16, 2020 till now, one year has been the President of the country for 352 days.

Guyana (Indian Origin Politicians in Guyana)

1. Cheddi Jagan: From 9 October 1992 to 6 March 1997, he was the President of Guyana for a total of 4 years 148 days.

2. Bharat Jagdeo: From 11 August 1999 to 3 December 2011, he was the President for a total of 12 years 114 days.

3. Donald Ramotar: From 3 December 2011 to 16 May 2015, he served as the President for a total of 3 years 164 days.

4. Irfaan Ali: From 2 August 2020 till now, he has been in the post of President for almost two years.

Singapore (Indian Origin Politicians in Singapore)

1. Devan Nair: From 23 October 1981 to 27 March 1985, he was in office for about three years 155 days.

2. SR Nathan: From 1 September 1999 to 31 August 2011, he held the office of President for almost 12 years.

3. Halimah Yacob: From 14 September 2017 to the present, she has been in the presidency for almost four years 291 days.

Trinidad and Tobago (Indian Origin Politicians in Trinidad and Tobago)

1. Noor Hassan Ali: From 20 March 1987 to 17 March 1997, he was President for almost 10 years.

2. Basdeo Pandey: From 9 November 1995 to 24 December 2001, he was the President for 6 years 362 days.

3. Kamla Persad-Bissessar: From 26 May 2010 to 9 September 2015, was the President for 5 years 108 days.

Portugal (Indian Origin Politicians in Portugal)

1. Alfredo Nobre da Costa: From 28 August 1978 to 22 November 1978, he was the Prime Minister of Portugal.

2. Antonio Costa: From 26 November 2015 to the present, he has been the Prime Minister of Portugal for almost 6 years 218 days.

Malaysia

Mahathir Mohamad served as the Prime Minister of Malaysia from 16 July 1981 to 31 October 2003 and again from 10 May 2018 to 1 March 2020. He held the power of Malaysia for a total of 24 years and 38 days.

Fiji

Mahendra Chaudhry held the post of Prime Minister of Fiji for about a year and 8 days, from 19 May 1999 to 27 May 2000.

Ireland

Leo Varadkar served as Prime Minister of Ireland from 14 June 2017 to 27 June 2020. After ruling the power for nearly three years and 13 days, he had to face defeat.

Seychelles

Wavel Ramkalawan, holding the post of President of Seychelles since 26 October 2020. He is originally from Gopalganj, Bihar.

Politicians of Indian origin are still at the top of power in these countries

The current Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Jugnauth and President Prithvirajsinh Rupun are both Indian-origin politicians. The current President of Suriname, Chan Santokhi, is also of Indian origin. Irfan Ali currently holds the presidency in Guyana. The current President of Singapore, Halimah Yacob, is also a politician of Indian origin. The current Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costa, is also of Indian origin. Apart from this, the current President of Seychelles, Waval Ramkalavan is also of Indian origin.
