UMN Regents approve contract with President Joan Gabel, increasing compensation to over $ 1 million

The University of Minnesota Board of Trustees on Friday approved a new five-year contract with President Joan Gable, which increases her total compensation to more than $ 1 million next year, as well as additional performance bonuses.

Chairman Ken Powell and Vice Chairman Steve Swiggum have agreed on a deal that Powell said would raise Gabel to the middle of the Big Ten.

Swiggum said the latest review of Gabel’s performance was “overwhelmingly positive.” … We want this lady to stay. Longevity. We want her to be here for a long time. “

The regents approved Gable’s contract 9-2 against Darrin Roche and James Farnsworth.

Gable joined U in 2019 with a salary of $ 640,000 and annual supplemental retirement benefits that started at $ 150,000.

Like other administrators, she gave up 10 percent of her salary last year to share the pain of the coronavirus pandemic. This school year, her salary was supposed to be $ 649,900.

But under the new contract, she will earn $ 662,863 this school year and $ 705,953 next year, up 3 percent each of the next three years.

Gable is also getting a big jump in supplementary pension contributions. U will commit $ 155,000 this year and $ 250,000 next year, with a further $ 10,000 increase.

When Gable was hired, the regents wanted to include performance bonuses in her compensation, but according to Powell, “there was not enough time.”

The new contract provides for potential bonuses of $ 50,000 this school year and $ 100,000 in future years.

New to the contract is an annual vehicle allowance of $ 5,000 this year and $ 10,000 in subsequent years, as well as an annual reimbursement of up to $ 15,000 for executive medical examinations.

Gabel is also eligible for benefits provided to other administrators, including medical, dental and life insurance, as well as a related retirement contribution, which for Gabel is approximately $ 30,000 a year, depending on IRS rules.

“I am amazed at what we have achieved and I am truly grateful and humble to lead such an exceptional community and work with so many wonderful scientists, students and innovators,” Gabel said ahead of contract negotiations Friday morning.
