UN Uses Dinosaurs to Convey Save Your Species Message to Warn of the Impact of Global Warming

BERLIN (AP) – The United Nations calls in an unusual “witness” to witness the dangers of burning fossil fuels that cause global warming: the dinosaur.

In a video posted on social media ahead of this year’s UN Climate Change Summit, a computer dinosaur bursts into the famous UN General Assembly Hall in New York to tell world diplomats that “extinction is bad.”

The lighthearted clip, voiced in the English version by actor Jack Black, carries a strong message that the United Nations Development Program hopes to carry home.

“You are heading for climate disaster,” the dinosaur says. “Yet every year governments spend hundreds of billions of public funds on fossil fuel subsidies. Imagine if we spent hundreds of billions a year subsidizing giant meteors. ”

In a companion report released Wednesday, the UN agency says its research shows the world spends more than four times as much annually, about $ 423 billion, on subsidizing fossil fuels for consumers than it does on helping poor countries fight global warming. …

The figure does not include the indirect costs of burning oil, coal and gas, such as the harm that fossil fuel emissions cause to the environment and human health.

UN Secretary General António Guterres has repeatedly called for an end to subsidies for fossil fuels, which many governments fear because of fears that price increases could provoke social unrest.

Achim Steiner, head of the United Nations Development Program, acknowledged that reforming the fossil fuel subsidy system will be difficult and may look different in every country.

“But we also know that we must give up these energy sources that are contributing to the decline of our planet,” he said. “Ending financial support for them on a fair and equitable basis is a critical element of this transition.”
