The number of unemployed people registered in the offices of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), at the end of October, promoted 36,936 people (1.36%) in October compared to the previous month. “This increase is more moderate than usual in a month, October, in which they join the labor market and in which the active and working population of Spain is at a historical high,” details the Ministry of Work and Social Economy.
Registered unemployment decreased by 155,488 people (-5.33%) compared to the same month last year. In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment fell by 6,883 people. The total reached 2,759,404 people, the lowest number this month since 2007.
By economic sectors compared to September, registered unemployment decreased in the Construction sector by 813 people (-0.39%). Increase in Services 31,281 people (1.61%), Industry 2,418 people (1.13%) and Agriculture 2,122 (2.13%). Among the group Without Previous Employment, it increased by 1,928 people (0.77%).
Unemployment by sex and age
Female unemployment increased by 20,192 women (1.23%) compared to September and is at 1,661,055. This is the lowest figure since 2008. Male unemployment also increased by 16,744 males (1.55%) to a total of 1,098,349.
If we compare to October 2022, the unemployment of women decreased by 85,703 women (-4.91%) and the unemployment of men decreased by 69,785 (-5.97%).
Unemployment among young people under 25 increased by 6,567 people (3.20%) in the month of October compared to the previous month. This is the lowest number of unemployed people under the age of 25 in the month of October in the historical series.
Unemployment in the autonomous communities
Unemployment registered in October of this year increased in almost all autonomous communities. The largest increase in absolute terms was recorded in Andalusia (7,401 people), Castilla-La Mancha (4,266 people) and Catalonia (4,261 people).
Compared to October 2022, registered unemployment decreased in all autonomous communities.
Contracts
The total number of contracts registered in the month of October was 1,396,514. In October 2023, 608,769 indefinite employment contracts were registered, representing 43.59% of all contracts.
