UNION CITY – Two people died after their vehicles collided with the road, blocking lanes for several hours on Sunday, authorities said.
Just before 5:45 pm, police responded to reports of a collision on Whipple Road west of Central Avenue and found a red Acura TL and a dark Honda Pilot with significant damage, police said in a statement.
Preliminary information from investigators and witnesses indicated that Acura was heading east on the Whipple when it crashed into a westbound Honda.
Despite the efforts of the Alameda County Fire Department, the Acura driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Both drivers were adults, but their identities were not released until the notice of next of kin, police said Sunday night.
At around 6:30 pm, police asked residents to avoid Whipple between Central Avenue and Hayman Street due to the accident, with police diverting traffic from the scene to help investigators. The lanes were expected to open early Monday morning.
