Representatives of the United Workers Front (FUT) demanded this Tuesday, in a press conference, that the outgoing government of Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso increase the salary from 450 to 550 dollars.
Similarly, the members of the union called on the administration to take measures to reduce the gap between the cost of the basic basket and the basic salary, which is not enough for their needs.
The Labor and Salaries Council, made up of eight members representing the executive, companies, and workers, must define the amount of the basic salary starting next January.
If an agreement cannot be reached, the Ministry of Labor will decide the salary.
The leader of the FUT, José Villavicencio, stated that the Council should also discuss issues such as the job creation policy and the new comprehensive organic labor code.
For his part, the president of the National Union of Educators (UNE) talked about the economic situation in the country by saying that some students leave public and private universities to look for work.
That is why he called on the government to create “social policies with a budget for the generation of jobs.”
Although union organizations are asking for an additional 100 dollars, the most expected is that the increase will be 25 dollars, as promised by Lasso in his election campaign, in 2021.
However, these incomes are only received by those who work formally, that is, less than half of Ecuadorian workers, while those who seek a life in the informal sector, 54.4 percent, do not have such a type of guarantee, and therefore they generally receive a lower amount. amount
