Upland won their second straight match at the CIF State Division II SoCal Regional on Thursday, defeating CIF San Diego Section Open Division finalist Westview 25-13, 25-13, 25-20 at Upland High School.
Second seed Upland (39–4) will play their final match of the season, the regional final at top seed Royal at 6 pm on Saturday. This will be a rematch of the previous Saturday’s CIF-SS Division 3 Championship match, which Royal had won in three sets. Won victory.
“This is the match we’ve been waiting for,” said Upland senior Jordan Lucas, who had 13 kills, eight digs and four assists. “I’m glad it’s going to be a high school. I don’t think (Long Beach City College) was a good host for it last week.
Upland coach Scott Robertson said: “We are very inspired to have the opportunity to play him again.” “I told him that there aren’t too many opportunities in life to do that.”
After defeating another San Diego section school, Scripps Ranch, Upland took control of Thursday’s match against third seed Westview.
Junior Kai Vogel helped set the opening tone as Upland scored nine straight points, eight on Vogel’s serve, to take a 10–2 lead in the first set. Vogel got into the rhythm with his powerful jump serve, recording two aces in that stretch and setting up teammates for easy kills on the others.
“He didn’t do as well in the rest of the match, but it was big in the beginning,” said Robertson.
In the second set, the Highlanders took a 12-6 lead at the start of a 6-1 run and then scored seven of the last eight.
Sophomore AJ Contreras, who moved into the middle blocker from an outside/opposite position for the state playoffs, was solid in that set, scoring runs with both blocks. He finished with four in the match, but there were several other instances where his block replaced Westview’s efforts.
The third set was very close with Westview senior Caiden Sznog placing the Wolverines with several kills in the match and was within 16-15. But Upland won five of the next six points and Westview never got closer to three points than the rest of the set.
Kai Vogel was second on Upland with seven kills, while Sean Slade had six kills and five blocks, and Isaiah Vogel had five kills and six digs.
Robertson believes his team is mentally better equipped this time against Royal.
“I think we got the monkey off our backs,” said Robertson. “We had a full week to prepare for a match (last Saturday) and I think we were a bit tight. We were fine physically. It was mental. We had to spend the whole week hearing how long we had lost a set.”
