US asked to reconsider visits to Ecuador due to violence

NEW YORK ( Associated Press) – The US State Department on Wednesday raised its alert level for travel to Ecuador and warned Americans to reconsider visiting the country due to unrest and violence.

The United States announced that it has labeled Ecuador a level 3 travel warning, meaning reconsider visiting the country, and said people should not travel to areas such as Carachi, Sucumbios, Guayaquil or the northern part of Esmeraldas province. Should do

“Crime is a widespread problem in Ecuador. Violent crimes, such as murder, assault, express kidnapping and armed robbery, are common,” the State Department warned in a statement.

The statement said that international criminal groups operate in the province of Esmeraldas and commit violent crimes that have claimed the lives of local residents. The State Department said these groups also planted bombs aimed at killing members of the Ecuadorian police and military.

The ability of US officials to offer emergency services to US citizens in the border region with Colombia is limited, as they cannot travel to the provinces of Esmeraldas, Carchi or Sucumbio without permission from the Embassy Security Office, he warned.

The statement also noted that protests and demonstrations are common in Ecuador and roads are often closed without prior notice, which can cause significant delays in travel to the airport.
