Passengers traveling to the US will soon be required to have a negative COVID-19 test within 24 hours of departure.

US President Joe Biden made the anticipated announcement on December 2 amid growing concerns about the new Omicron version.

According to a White House briefing, the new rules will go into effect early next week. All US-bound international travelers will be required to take a test within one day of their departure, regardless of nationality or vaccination status. With limited exceptions, unvaccinated travelers are not allowed to enter the US.

The US announcement comes just days after Canada announced that US travelers were exempt from the new travel measures. Currently, fully vaccinated air travelers from all countries except the US must be tested upon arrival at a Canadian airport. Until their test comes negative, they will have to go into quarantine.

Canada’s health minister, Jean-Yves Duclos, said the government would meet with the provinces to discuss measures with the US. As of now, no further developments have been made public since November 30.

Passengers must now be fully vaccinated to board an airplane or train in Canada.

They will be tested again on arrival and will have to go into quarantine for 14 days and complete a test on the 8th day.

Those arriving by air will go to a designated quarantine facility while awaiting their arrival test result. They can leave once their test results come back negative.

Those coming by land may be allowed to go directly to the designated quarantine place in their quarantine plan. If they do not have a suitable quarantine plan, they will be sent to a designated quarantine facility.
