The Secretary of Defense of the US, Lloyd Austin, publicly apologized this Thursday for hiding his cancer and hospitalization, an issue that caused anger in the country.

“I want to be very clear. We didn’t handle it well. I didn’t handle it well,” he said at a press conference.

“I should have informed the president of my cancer diagnosis. I also told my team and the American people. I take full responsibility. I apologize to my colleagues and the American people,” he added.

But “I want to make it very clear that there are no gaps in the authorities or danger in the command and control of the department,” he stressed.

Austin was heavily criticized when it was revealed that he was hospitalized and kept his condition a secret, against current protocols.

All this at a time when the leading military power in the world is closely following two wars: in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

President Joe Biden has not heard about the cancer diagnosis for weeks, according to the White House.

The matter has caused consternation even among Democrats, and some Republicans have called for the resignation of the Secretary of Defense, trying to calm things down.

“I have recovered well, but as you can see, I’m still recovering,” he told reporters. “I still have pain in my leg,” he said, and he specified that he is doing physical therapy to overcome it.
