The United States Secretary of State, Anthony Blink, arrived in Ukraine this Wednesday for a surprise visit.
The head of US diplomacy will meet with the President of Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, are expected to announce a new US aid package.
It’s about Blinken’s third trip to Kyiv since the beginning of the war. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said the visit would last two days, meaning Blinken would sleep in Kiev for the first time since the Russian invasion began.
A new aid package over 1,000 million
is expected to announce a New $1 billion aid package for Ukraine.
So far, the US has provided more than $43 billion worth of military aid to Ukraine.
The State Department also hopes to hear firsthand about the progress of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, which has been going on for three months and whose progress is slow.
“I think the most important thing is that we have a real assessment of the Ukrainians themselves,” said the department spokesman. “We want to see and hear how they intend to progress in the coming weeks,” he added.
Finally, Blinken’s visit has one dimension of US domestic politics at a time when continued support for Ukraine is being questioned.
“It’s also a good time to remind the American people why this matters,” the spokesman said, noting that “dictators and autocrats cannot take a piece from their neighbor and keep it with impunity.”
