US Treasury Department sanctions two officials close to President Nayib Bukele

(CNN Spanish) — The United States Department of the Treasury reported this Friday that it sanctioned two officials close to El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, believing they were involved in possible acts of corruption and human rights violations.

They are the Minister of Labor, Rolando Castro, and the Legal Secretary of the Presidency, Conan Castro.

The United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned Rolando Castro for misusing public funds for his own gain, manipulating unions for personal political purposes, and favoring the Bukele government, as reported by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). explained in a statement. , also disclosed in El Salvador by the Embassy of the United States in that Central American country.

Castro used his Twitter account to challenge the decision. “Treasury Department without jurisdiction in labor matters and approval for disbursement of credits or not.”

Following the sanctions, the Treasury Department can freeze assets if they are in US territory, as well as bar sanctioned individuals and their close relatives from entering the North American country. The decision is supported by the Magnitsky Law, which gives the right to revoke visas to foreigners linked to cases of corruption and human rights violations.

“To the people of the United States of America, my respect and admiration. I ask your government, freeze my bank accounts in your country, I authorize you,” Castro added in his message.

In the case of the presidency’s legal secretary, Conan Castro, US authorities pointed him to obstruction of an investigation into possible mismanagement of public funds used by the government to attend to the COVID-19 emergency. Castro has not spoken since the publication of the sanctions. CNN is awaiting a response to a request for comment on Castro and the government through the Communications Secretariat of the Presidency of El Salvador.

In December 2021, the United States government sanctioned other officials for alleged links to acts of corruption, including Carolina Recinos, chief of staff of the Bukele government.

“It is clear that the government of the United States of America does not accept cooperation, friendship or alliance. This is complete submission or nothing. These daily accusations are seen as absurd. I had no idea they were so interested in El Salvador. Perhaps what is their interest in preventing a ‘bad example'”, Bukele then wrote on his Twitter account.
