OpenSecrets, which tracks the use of money in politics and elections, said the cost of the 2022 election surpasses the previous midterms, a record so far of $13.7 billion in 2018.
The Washington-based organization said on its website that 8.9 billion of the 16.7 billion was spent on elections to renew the federal Congress, either by candidates for seats or by political committees supporting candidates.
Another $7.8 billion, according to OpenSecrets, was spent on gubernatorial elections, state legislatures and referendums held in various states on issues such as abortion or marijuana legalization.
By comparison, in 2018, $7.1 billion was spent on federal elections and $6.6 billion on statewide elections.
