USC WR Drake London imposes its will on defense

LOS ANGELES – In the first half of USC’s loss to Oregon State, Trojan receiver Drake London was hit with a USC sideline. In an effort to bring down the 6-foot-5, 210-pound London, the Oregon State defender swooped on London’s face mask and cleaned his helmet.

When London walked off the field, his eyes widened as he sticks out his tongue and shakes his head back and forth in one of the most memorable moments of the college football season.

“To be honest, I couldn’t even tell you what I was doing at the time,” said London. “At that point whatever comes to my mind comes to my mind and I just go with it. That’s what I was feeling at the time and I think I need to tell him who the boss was, And so did I.”

London has left no doubt about his position this season. Through four games, the junior is leading the nation in receiver receptions (39) and receiving yards (540). He is at the top with nine tackled tackles, second with 11 forcibly missed tackles and has put USC down 22 times for the first time.

His performance so far may lead him to join Marquis Lee as the only USC player to win the Fred Biletnikoff Award, presented annually since 1994 for Most Outstanding Receiver in College Football. is done.

“He’s a beast,” said USC interim head coach Donnett Williams. “From Day 1 before the season even started, I said, ‘He’s the Biletnikoff winner.'”

And London could even make its case for one of the best seasons in USC history. He is currently on pace to finish second in program history in reception and receiving yards for one season. Lee set both records in 2012 with 118 receptions and 1,721 yards.

“I think it’s the standard when you come here, especially as a wide receiver,” London said of joining the list of elite USC receivers. “It’s definitely been thought about and I think it definitely works.”

With the increased success of London came more attention from the strongholds. He tried to understand early in his career how Michael Pittman Jr. dealt with dual teams, and London had some late hits and contacts as the defense tried to take him off his game.

But London is taking this even further with its increased confidence.
