What was supposed to be a moment of fun and joy turned into a true tragedy for 13-year-old Mark Fajardo. FilipinasJoe climbed a carousel as part of Halloween celebrations and, in the middle of the turn, was thrown, hit a pole and ended up in the hospital, where he had to undergo surgery and lost a lung.
The panic began when the carousel started intensifying and gaining momentum. People cried, especially when they saw Mark Fajardo being thrown from his chair and hitting a pole. The incident took place in Urdaneta in the Philippine province of Pangasinan.
The seriously injured teenager was admitted to the hospital. He survived, but had to undergo a pneumonectomy (removal of the lung) due to the sequence left behind by the impact. Doctors advised Fajardo to be extremely careful as he now has only one lung, his mother told the media.
“I hope the operators don’t lie. They blame my son, they say he took the insurance. Why would he do something when the carousel was going so fast?” said Mark’s mother.
Pangasinan Police General Riya Takderan announced that the incident was being investigated. “Our problem now is to determine whether someone monitors or examines the devices before using them,” he specified. The carousel was closed till the matter was resolved. And according to the police, the fairgrounds were operating legally, but courts can revoke that authorization if it is proved that there was a security breach.
